Kokstad is built on the outer slopes of the Drakensberg and is 1,302 meters above sea level. Behind it, Mount Currie rises to a height of 2,224 meters. This South Western tip of KwaZulu-Natal is the southern gateway to the entire KwaZulu-Natal midlands and Eastern Cape including The Wild Coast. The location is cradled by the mighty Drakensberg, the Nungi and Ingeli Mountains and characterized by numerous rivers and streams, wide open spaces and unspoilt valleys, covering an area of 4000 square kilometers.
