Kwa Thabeng Bush Lodge
DESCRIPTION
LOCATION
Kwa Thabeng self catering bush camp, bordering the Blyde Canyon Nature Reserve at the top of the mountain, is situated 25km west of Hoedspruit in the Limpopo Province Lowveld. Sometimes this region is also referred to as the Valley of the Olifants. The world renowned Kruger National Park (KNP) is not to far away and only a 40 minute drive of about 70km will take you to the Orpen entrance gate. Make it a day outing and arrive early at Satara for a sumptuous breakfast at the excellent restaurant or take your picnic basket and head for one of the open air unfenced picnic spots where you can sit under a tree next to the Timbavati river and watch the game leisurely walk by. Keep your eyes open wide and scramble for your car if you happen to spot one of the big five.
From Pretoria or Johannesburg it is about a 4-5 hour scenic drive as you wind through the Panorama Routes mountain passes. On your way to our self catering lodge make a half way stop in the quaint little town of Dullstroom. Grab a quick brunch in one of the many restaurants or coffee shops, a cup of coffee and a pancake at Harries Panckakes, or just stretch your legs and take a stroll down to the Old Transvaal Inn where you will find delicious mouth watering homemade sweets. You can also make a small detour to the ancient gold mining town of Pilgrims Rest (dont miss the Royal Hotel), Gods Window, the Bourkes Luck Potholes and the Lowveld Lookout Point view towards the Three Rondawels which is most spectacular. Visit our picture gallery for a preview of what awaits you on your journey.
On arrival at Kwa Thabengs self catering bush camp accommodation you will find that the bush camp is situated in between the majestic Drakensberg escarpment and the crystal clear all-year-round flowing Blyde River. The elevation difference from top to bottom is about 1200m and lends itself to a diverse habitat that varies from fynbos to dense forest which in turn attracts an abundance of varied bird life. Here you can hear and spot the ever so elusive Purple Crested Lourie, Knysna Lourie, Trumpeter Hornbill, Green Pigeon, Giant Eagle Owl, to name but a few. You will also find that we are very close to the Forever Aventura Resort (Sybrand van Niekerk) and situated at the entry point of the Blyde River Canyon which makes up part of the Kruger to Canyons Biosphere. Its an ideal overnight stop or spring board for visiting the surrounding game lodges and game reserves like Kapama, Moholoholo and Kruger Park.
