Witbank is situated on the highveld of Mpumalanga, within
the Emalahleni Local Municipality. Witbank is appoximately 120km
from Johannesburg and 100km from Pretoria heading eastwards.
Witbank is the energy centre of South Africa and the focal point of
Africas largest coalfields, power stations and steel
manufacturing.The coal mining area has 22 collieries in area no
more than 40km in any direction.
Witbank was established in 1890 and early attempts to exploit the
coal deposits failed until the railway from Pretoria reached the
area in 1894. It was proclaimed a town in 1903 and became a
municipality in 1914.
The name Witbank is Afrikaans for White Ridge and is named
after a white sandstone outcrop where wagon transport drivers
rested.
In March 2006, the town was renamed Emalahleni, the Nguni
word for the place of coal.
Tourist attractions include the nature reserve, industrial coal
mine and power station tours, cultural experiences, adventure
sport, environmental activities and water sport. Witbank Dam is
the biggest municipal dam in the southern hemisphere.
The adjoining nature reserve is a nature-lovers delight, with 50
different tree species and 150 flower varieties, amongst which
are the rare ground orchids and gladiola type. It supports a wide
variety of game species and various trails have been mapped
out in the reserve, where 173 bird species can be detected.
The city is provincial home to many sporting diciplines and
performing arts. The Witbank Cultural Centre includes a fully
equiped, five hundred seater civic theatre.
